Got a DM (direct message) on Saturday from former Eugene potter Ken Standhardt. He and his husband moved to California several years ago to take care of a family member. He's still active on Instagram, though, and offered to post a few of my pictures to his feed. He has roughly 45,000 followers, and wants to promote potters whose work he appreciates.I said Sure! and sent him some photos from my last firing. They went up Wednesday night. Thursday morning I had 30 new followers.
As I was restocking the van for Holiday Market, I took a few photos, just to give the new kids something to look at, including the tall mugs here. Got a DM at midnight asking if they were available to buy. And this afternoon, the octopus and the sea turtle mug were on their way to New York City.
(All together now: New York City!?!)
Just did another post; I'm up to 157 followers. Cool, huh?
So, that's how it's supposed to work
Sep. 6th, 2020 12:00 pmI've been on Instagram for three weeks now. It's been kinda fun, a little stressful. Posting is faster than here--I can pop a picture on my phone and have it up in minutes. On the other hand, there's a pressure to post all the time that I don't have on the blog, where I feel like I need to wait for something cogent or interesting to say.
You in the back! Stop snickering!
I also have to watch myself for a tendency to judge my self-worth by my number of followers, currently around 80-odd. It is kinda cool to have followers from around the world: England, Spain and Turkey, so far.
But I seem to be getting the hang of it, mixing older pottery pix with studio works-in-progress, even a few--very short--videos. (Their limit is 60 seconds, so they get impressionistic stream-of-pottery, as opposed to the polished music videos I give you guys.) I've got some consistent hashtags to use, and am even learning how to tag in people properly.
Case in point: Yesterday morning, during set-up, I shot my usual "Today's theme is" picture. Sea life, in fact: salmon, octopus, dolphins, whale, sea turtle. Uploaded it to Dreamwidth, of course, but I also posted it to my Instagram, with the caption, "Making waves @saturdaymarket." Which has an implied pun (of course) but also makes it show up on the Eugene Saturday Market feed.
Shortly thereafter, a comment appeared: @(person_one) Are those butter dishes in the background? @(person_two), Look!
They were indeed, and the folks involved showed up later that morning to purchase their very own, rooster-patterned French butter dish. Person one has also started following me on Instagram.
Huh. Maybe there's something to this social media thing after all.

I'm slowly succumbing to the realities of 21st century art-inizing. Social media! they say. Gotta have social media!
What, a Dreamwidth blog isn't social enough?
I just created an account with Instagram. Mildly grumpy that I can only post from my phone or tablet; all the best pix are here on the laptop. Also, their video limit is 60 seconds, so those will continue to appear here and at my website. But we'll see what we can do within their format. #OffCenterCeramicsEugene. #whimsicalandfunctional. #stonewarepottery. I feel cooler and hipper already.
My handle there is off_center_ceramics. Note the underscores; they're important. "offcenterceramics" is someone completely different. As is "offcenter_ceramics." Sigh.
