I have my life, and I don't want to even be aware of that world.

Today, video footage of the whole incident shot by the shooter emerged. We are now beyond "I can shoot someone in broad daylight and get away with it" territory. We are at "I can shoot someone in the head in broad daylight, film it, broadcast it to the world and still get away with it."

Potato had been showing up on the street for a while, thin enough to stand out once you really looked. On New Year's Day, she skipped the subtle hints and walked straight into the house when the door opened for groceries, settling in the hallway like she'd done it a hundred times before. She clearly knew what she was looking for.

Once she was inside, it was obvious how underweight she was. Beneath all that long fur, she was all bones. A vet appointment was made immediately, though it took a few days to get in. During that wait, she was given regular meals, fresh water, a litter box, and time to get comfortable being indoors. She adjusted quickly, as if routine was something she'd been missing for a long time.

The vet confirmed she was around ten or eleven years old, not microchipped, and almost certainly a stray. That answered a lot of questions. The area has plenty of cats who come and go, and from a distance it had been hard to tell whether she belonged to anyone. But no one came looking, and her condition told its own story.

Potato turned out to be exactly the right name. She's fluffy, a little lumpy, and oddly charming. By coincidence, the family once had a cat named Spud Pud, and the name mix-ups happen often, which somehow feels fitting. Now she has a pink collar, regular meals, and a quiet place to rest. She's no longer wandering the street. She's settled, safe, and clearly where she's meant to be.

Being telepathic, the creatures had not developed the legal language of contracts, but that did not mean their help came with only a vague promise of mutual aid. Their representative handed her a blank page and a palette of paints. She was expected to paint a scene representative of their agreement, each brushstroke as complex as a well-placed Latin phrase and as binding as a signature.

Feeling very knife-y today

Feeling very knife-y today. Not stabby, exactly, but man, the news has just been unrelenting war, death, and aggression lately, and although things have been relatively calm where I live (compared to Minneapolis, Portland, or Chicago) I can’t help but feel like we’re next.

I had an Uber driver a couple of weeks ago — white guy, trucker hat, flannel shirt, came in a big SUV, and I really wasn’t sure if I should talk politics since he very well *might* have been a MAGA sort — but we’re not in the car two minutes before we passed a bumper sticker or a sign or something that made him say, “dang, I just don’t know what to do with this country… do you think we’re going to have to fend off an invasion by the National Guard?

Turns out he only looks like a lumberjack: he’s got a PhD in political science. He was thinking of taking a course in field medicine first aid, figuring that would be the most useful thing he could do on the front lines. “I can’t believe I’m even talking about this,” he said. “But here we are.” I encouraged him to take the course. More healers can only be a good thing.

Speaking of which, a list of “things you can do besides protest or vote” is going around, and one of the suggestions is get trained in “PFA” which is “psychological first aid.” The Canadian Red Cross offers online courses, one in PFA self-care, and one in helping others. Red Cross/Red Crescent has a whole curriculum built around the recognition that mental health is crucial for any kind of help providers as well as those being helped.

I’m thinking of doing at least the self care course…? It’s only $20 (Canadian!).

Meanwhile, you can see my mood reflected in the swag I just designed for my book launch next week. Photo below. (Skip the rest of this post if you want to skip the book biz stuff. I know it’s a weird-ass time to be trying to launch a book… )

And for all the times as a boy that I rejected what I knew was right and for all the family holiday dinners that seemed so much less important than they really were and all the friends that I treated cruelly, and for my children when I wasn’t really that great of a single parent, and for the relationships that were less than healthy, and for the times I ignored my friends and for the days when I brought my work home when I should have been paying more attention to my family, and for the nickel of milk money that I took out of Sharon’s desk in the 3rd grade, and for stupid argument I had with my wife in Penn Station and for the way I made fun of people and for the deck of playing cards that I stole from Loo’s Pharmacy and for the cars that I vandalized with spray paint when I was ten and for the times of being so angry about cancer that I lost my patience and kindness, and for the days that I just didn’t feel like going to the VA Hospital to see my dad, and for all the returnable soda bottles I stole from the back of the Hudson to cash in at two cents each, and for a list
that could run on forever...

It's cuddle season. No one is judging you for cuddling your cat instead of a human.

Seriously though, there's no shame in being single for the winter season. In a 2023 study, 41% of citizens reported being single between ages 25-39! That's almost half of the dating population that is simply choosing solitude and singlehood over being coupled up. It's hard these days to maintain a relationship, or maybe it's always been like that. Sometimes it feels like no one has the power anymore. Where women once held the baton of power and control in relationships and dating, it seems like roles are being switched around, questioned, and oscillating with the times. With dating apps, the fear of someone better could be causing a lot more single people than coupled. You may have a great date, but there's another date just a swipe away.

Even if so many young adults are choosing single solitude, you can still get those much needed cuddles in! In the form of cat hugs, kitty snuggles, and feline cuddles. What's wrong with choosing the cat life over dealing with some overprotective, overly jealous guy who's probably just going to hurt you in the end? People show their true colors, and it can be downright embarrassing to go on first dates. The same conversations over your favorite shows, music tastes, your backstory in what you studied, what you do for work, or trying desperately to talk about more interesting idiosyncrasies that we all have inside of us.

So when the world of dating seems bleak, and the sky gets dark at 4:30 pm, never fear. You'll always have the warmth of your cat to comfort you through rainy nights, pillow fights, and anything else. The great thing about cats being your snuggle partner is that they will never leave you! Sure, they might get out of bed to use their litter box, or get some bites of food, but ultimately they're basically stuck with you. Better to use them while you can. Turn on that cozy winter movie to watch together, or scroll hilarious cat memes with your cat, but make sure to tell him or her that you're not talking to any other cats! Some cats get jealous, don't they? So enjoy these absolutely hissterical cat memes for cozy, cold, winter cuddles.

Soup gives us a warm and cozy feeling when it's blizzarding outside, which is why this woman named an orange-like-cheddar-cheese cat after a bowl of hearty broccoli soup. After noticing a huddled mass on the side of the highway in -35 degree weather, a kind rescuer pulled over to the shoulder and rushed to the kitty's aid. Without hesitation, he started purring at the sight of her and hasn't stopped since.

Warm like a bowl of homemade soup and cozy like a winter classic, this resilient cat earned the name Mr. Broccoli Cheddar Soup. Since his miraculous discovery on the side of the road, BC's journey has been far from easy, but to ease the pain of the loss of his limbs and the multiple vet visits, he combats his woes with a positive attitude, warm purrsonality, and a rambunctious gusto for life that gives us that fuzzy feeling in our souls

Come along with me to witness a feline's journey that started out hopelessly cold and dim, but ended up brightening the lives of every human who came across him. Because when you have Broccoli Cheddar Soup in your midst, it's impawsible to deny the warm, fuzzy feeling inside.

Hot take but I think echo chambers are fine, actually. Like, have you ever actually been in one? They’re super fun; yelling into the void and having it yell back. Endless wonder and joy. At least mine is. If yours sucks sounds like a you problem. Maybe you should stop screaming obnoxious hateful things into it idk just a thought I had, hey.

2026 has consisted of a few events that have contributed to my ever declining faith in humanity. I’m sure it’s done the same for many of you, so I thought today would be a good time to tell you about some positive interactions I had with strangers this past week, to remind us that not everyone is terrible, and we can still have nice moments in our personal life, even among strangers.

Yesterday, I drove to the next town over to get a coffee, and en route saw a man sitting on his front porch playing the banjo. On my return journey home I was stopped at the stoplight in front of his house, and I rolled down my window to listen to him. He was very talented, playing the banjo beautifully. He looked up at me and I gave him two thumbs up out my window and smiled at him. He smiled and returned to his skillful playing. The light turned green and I drove off.

A few days ago I was at Meijer, and a couple walked past me while I was looking at the bagels. The girl said “oh, bagels actually sound really good right now,” to which the guy replied, “you should grab some bagels.” She came up next to me and started looking at bagels, too.

“You should totally get bagels,” I reaffirmed.

“Well I saw you looking at them and thought they did sound good!”

“Did you see the cranberry ones? That’s what I grabbed, they sounded delish.”

“Ooh, those do sound good.”

“I’m about to go grab strawberry cream cheese to put on them.”

“Yum what a good combo!”

“Have a good one!”

“You too!”

I walked away, smiling.

So often I am completely indifferent to (or even resent) everyone else that’s at the grocery store, but sometimes it’s good to remember that the other people at the store are also just girls who want a bagel, like you. And normally I don’t strike up conversation, because who wants to be talked to while they’re grocery shopping, but something in me just sought connection with my fellow bagel shopper in that particular moment.

Just a couple days ago, a stranger came to my house to buy a microwave I had listed on Facebook Marketplace, and she said I had the most beautiful home on the block, and we had a brief conversation about moving troubles and how the house looked great. It made me smile. I’m glad she said something so nice, it really brightened my day.

Multiple times this week alone, strangers walking down the street or driving past me have waved, or nodded, or smiled, and it’s such a good recognition of, “hello, other human, I see you.”

Such small acts of acknowledgement that you exist and everyone else is a person like you. I don’t know, it just makes me feel better, and I thought maybe it would make you think of the last time a stranger smiled at you, too.

Feel free to share nice interactions in the comments, I’d love to hear them. And have a great day!

-AMS

☽✩ the werewolf pack (au) meme ✩☾

There are many supernatural beings that congregate in groups for survival or protection or just for companionship, not unlike humans. Witches have covens. Vampires have nests. But none of those have connections that can compare to the bond of a werewolf pack.

You should know. You're part of one, either born a werewolf or turned. For humans, blood is thicker than water; for wolves, the pack is to the bone. Of course, with humans, romantic relationships can complicate closeness of other sorts. That's not the case with werewolf pairings, as they tend to grow out of natural pack dynamics and are viewed as just another facet of life. The only difference is that werewolves tend to treat relationships, even potential would-be-mates, with extreme seriousness.

After all, you'll fight for your pack, so you'll fight for your mate, won't you?
