"No one wants to go in there when a random f***ing tweet can change the entire foreign policy of the country."
-- oil industry investor, about Venezuela

I was reading a quote from an Exxon exec, talking about how all of Exxon's assets had been nationalized by Venezuela TWICE. Yeah, not a place where oil companies are going to be eager to rush back in to rebuild their infrastructure.

Not going to bother talking about a certain person's habit of changing international policy via social media posts, waste of finger and mental energy.

Not much to report this week. I’m a fan of Toronto, but the weather has been miserable. In retrospect, maybe I should have brought my sunlamp with me. That’s normal, right? In any case, I managed to do a successful academic conference, but I’m woefully behind on everything else.

New Year's Resolution - Read for fun!

I want to read for fun, for pleasure, to reread old favourites, to read fan-fiction and not to be waylaid by 'should read..' or 'best of...' I'm planning to visit brick-and-mortar bookshops and take my own sweet time browsing and selecting a book to read. I'm going to pick a book which I want to read right now this minute, not one which looks interesting and will just be added to the TBR pile.

Inspired by this Tom Gauld cartoon which I have printed out and stuck on to the fridge.

I refuse to start forgetting to post here in January. I absolutely refuse. I'm going to make it to February if it kills me.

Writing is going well! On writing days, I'm averaging almost 2k. It's great and I'm above where I need to be to hit my wordcount goal (40k on a specific project) for the month. The goal used to be 30k on a specific project, finishing it, but uh. It's gonna take more than that to hit the end. So, hopefully it'll be done at 40k. I'm 60% of the way through the wordcount, and I think????? I'm 60% through the story?

idk

Is anyone else extremely stressed about what we're going to replace discord with if it goes AI? Is anyone else extremely stressed that some friends are going to refuse to move and you won't be able to talk to them anymore? :\ I vote we all go back to using IRC. For the record. Stop complicating things with icons and voice chat and etc. I just want to do typeytypey with my friends.

(I'm the_wanlorn over there, also ftr)

Anyway. Back to writing probably. Later my gators.

🎬 The Residence: Created by Paul William Davies. With Uzo Aduba, Giancarlo Esposito, Molly Griggs, Ken Marino. Inside the White House's staff residence and the lives which workers share with the First Family. 🔗

Binge rewatched The Residence today and I liked it much more this time around (tho I still think it's a bit too long).

In my first watch, I was too anxious to get to the solution and it became frustrating when they went on tangents. Knowing the solution and watching it again was much more fun. I enjoyed the humor more and caught some things about the murder motive that I missed the first time around.

I wish they'd do another season, or even a movie! I love the Cordelia Cupp character.

I recommended the first story in this series when I read it in Yuletide, suspecting but not being sure at the time that it was by [personal profile] sanguinity.

I love William Bush's POV too:

Too Late, Too Late (2008 words) by sanguinity
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Hornblower (TV)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: William Bush, Horatio Hornblower
Additional Tags: POV William Bush, Episode: e07 Loyalty (Hornblower), Hurt/Comfort, First Kiss
Series: Part 2 of The Worst Part of Waking Up
Summary:

Bush is too late to the beach to stop the firing squad.

Bonus Bush point-of-view on the beach scene.

A stained-glass advertisement for the Czech electronics company TESLA is located in the Světozor Passage in Prague. Created by artist František Hudeček in 1947, this artwork features the TESLA radio logo and is a historical example of sophisticated urban branding. The TESLA company is unrelated to the American electric car manufacturer, despite the shared name.  It was a state-run manufacturer of electronic equipment under the Communist government of Czechoslovakia until 1991, when it was privatized.

whitherward [hwith-er-werd]

adjective:
(archaic) toward what or which place

Examples:

I felt him directing my looks to what I beheld, shaping my thoughts whitherward they went; but it pleased him to remain invisible. (William Young, Mathieu Ropars: et cetera)

Messire, whitherward is the stable? (Howard Pyle, The Story of Sir Launcelot and His Companions)

We see not whence the eddy comes, nor whitherward it is tending, and we seem ourselves to witness their flight without a sense that we are changed; and yet Time is beguiling man of his strength, as the winds rob the woods of their foliage. (Sir Walter Scott, Woodstock)

Arthur looked, and drew at the caitiff who went afoot beside Atra, and Birdalone at him who went by Viridis, for she wotted whitherward Arthur’s shaft would be turned. (William Morris, The Water of the Wondrous Isles)

We know not whom we trust
Nor whitherward we fare,
But we run because we must
Through the great wide air. (Charles Hamilton Sorley, 'The Song of the Ungirt Runners')

Origin:
Inherited from Middle English whiderward, from whider ('whither') from Old English hwider, from Proto-Germanic hwithre-, from hwi- 'who' (from PIE root kwo-) + ward (adverbial suffix of Germanic origin expressing direction or tendency to or from a point, Old English -weard 'toward,' sometimes -weardes (with genitive singular ending of neuter adjectives), from Proto-Germanic werda- (cognates: Old Saxon, Old Frisian -ward, Old Norse -verðr, German -wärts), variant of PIE werto- 'to turn, wind' (from root wer- (2) 'to turn, bend'). ) (Online Etymology Dictionary)

The earliest known use of the adverb whitherward is in the Middle English period (1150—1500). OED's earliest evidence for whitherward is from around 1175, in Ormulum. (Oxford English Dictionary)

Shortwave

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) has today resumed shortwave radio broadcasts into Iran following the imposition of an internet blackout by the Islamic Republic. Working with several commercial vendors, RFE/RL’s Persian-language service Radio Farda is once again providing an alternative to state-controlled media. Radio Farda reaches 6.5 million Iranians inside the country each week across digital platforms.

For no reason, thought I’d share this old school means of getting around internet blocks. Never underestimate the ability to get information when you have a cheap Chinese radio and a bunch of AA batteries.

This is an old article from October '25, I'm clearing out old tabs.

It's quite simple. The basic plan is to ensure that they are properly managing current and projected electrical needs and growth, and that they don't have crypto mining and AI data centers popping up everywhere and draining all of their generation capacity. Keep Canadian power generation for the province's residents and local industry - to which I say, GO CANADA!

There are useful aspects to AI/LLMs, but not in the form of generative AI and chat bots. Investors are seeking quick bucks and are creating a bubble: while there's no telling when it'll burst, we're going to see a lot of sobbing and knocking on government doors for bailouts when it happens. Can't happen too soon, IMO.
