Theoretically, I could have slept late today. Booth is all up, potluck and mandatory meeting isn't until 2 pm, and the show doesn't open until four.

Instead, I'm perched on a stool in day-glo vest at a quarter to eight. Security.

For years, Clayfolk has set up in the National Guard Armory in Medford. It's a big, bright place, relaxed and welcoming, and Doug, the day-shift maintenance guy, treats us like royalty. This year, though, word came down from Washington to tighten up security on all federal facilities.

This means no unattended entries. No more propping all six doors open and letting people come and go at will. There needs to be controlled access, with security at every open door. Our chair had a brief panic attack--no, a long panic attack, traces of which are still showing this morning--before coming up with a simple, reasonable solution. One that didn't involve paying the Armory $30 per door per day for security.

So we each work one hour as security, at one of the back or side doors--the lobby door is secured by the front office. You come in the front door when you arrive, pick up your Clayfest name badge; nobody gets in without one.

They reserved Friday shifts for out-of-towners, and since I hate being interrupted, I decided to get my bit over before I started setting up for the day, not expecting that I'd already be finished.

It's all right, though, a quiet shift. I'm catching up on writing, getting up occasionally to open the door, and listening to the comforting ceramic clatter of set-up as the show comes awake behind me.
