Denise takes the day off work, so we set off through monsoon rains, bound for Southern Oregon. Medford's about three hours, and as many watersheds/climate zones away, so it's overcast, but dry when we arrive around 1:30 pm. I score a parking space next to the door, so loading goes smoothly. We're basically set up, except for a few minor details when we leave for the motel at 5 pm.

Clayfolk celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, in its typically understated fashion. The last time Clay Fest had a major anniversary, we added an evening reception with live music. Showcase would probably do something elaborate and expensive, involving visiting artists and a brass band. Clayfolk handed out balloons and asked us to hang them in our booths. I love these guys…

One way they've kept the show fresh for forty years is by moving people around. Their rule is that nobody gets the same space in successive years. (Except for Tea and Nina, who share a double booth in the corner just inside the right front door. Though, come to think of it, they can follow the letter of the law, if not its intent, by alternating which of the two booths they each choose.)

A lot of people seem to orbit around the same neighborhood. I'm low enough on the points list that I take whatever's available when my name comes up. Usually it's somewhere in the middle, or buried in back, but this year I'm on the front wall, between the two doors. I don't expect it to make much difference; it's a small enough show that nobody really gets lost.
