Sorting pots for galleries on Sunday, while waiting for the kiln to cool. Valley Art Center has already been stocked for the holidays; Crow Valley Pottery and Childhood's End Gallery still need work.

It's very different, picking out work for them. Crow Valley is a consignment arrangement, and except for a few restrictions--No predators, people here on the island don't like them--I'm free to pick and choose. With gift sales in mind, I give them a bunch of smaller items--tall mugs, stews, plates--along with a mix of bakers, servers, cookie jars.

Childhood's End is straight consignment: I deliver, they send me a check at the end of the month. With this is mind, they're more specific with what they want, they have a budget. Their order looks like X many pasta bowls, Y small square bakers, 1 each medium and small serving bowls... with a generous list of patterns they think they can sell.

As a result, I can generally put together a package for Crow Valley from stock in hand; Childhood's End usually involves some special production.

The other difference between the two is that Crow Valley comes to collect their pots. Michael or Jeffri send an email to their potters, gas up the van and head down I-5. I used to have to meet them in Portland, a two-hour drive, but they've recently added a stop in Independence, Oregon, which is only an hour and a quarter away. For Childhood's End, I'm responsible for getting the pots to them, which usually involves a long day's drive up and back, sweetened slightly by banh mi sandwiches at the Vietnamese restaurant across the street.

This time, though, I get lucky. Turns out Michael knows the gallery, and is willing to divert from his trip home long enough to deliver my pots this afternoon, which means I get an extra studio day tomorrow.
