We're traveling tomorrow, going back to Wisconsin for my Mom's 90th birthday, so of course today is all the things: reserve a taxi, check in with the car rental, the airline, how many bags will we need to check, what do we pack? So many details...

I figured, with all the checklists I've saved on my computer, I must have one for vacation trips, right? Apparently not. I've got pottery show checklists for indoor shows, outdoor shows, co-op shows, the lot. No handy lists to tick off things I need, traveling for fun.

So I sat down with a pad at breakfast, breaking down what will go in the checked bag--clothes, bathroom kit, coat and hat, pocket knife--and what will go in the carry-on, mostly food, books, empty water bottle (to be filled inside security). Bears, of course.

Thinking I should type it up and save it for the future.

I have a "Universal Packing List" saved on my computer (and a copy printed out and kept in one of the pockets of my suitcase). It has everything I might need for any kind of trip, from overnight in summer to two weeks in Europe in winter. The list also includes a pre-departure checklist, including items like turn the heat down to 50F degrees, put some lights on timers, take out the compost, and so on. I add to the list when I think of new items to bring along. It is so much easier than trying to think of everything when packing.
