I don't multi-task well. I find it really difficult to split my attention between simultaneous projects, which is one of the reasons I get so little done on firing days. So this last week has been purgatory.
My big spring pottery show is the Oregon Potters Association's Ceramic Showcase, coming up the first weekend of May. Because it's run by us potters, we each have responsibilities toward making the show work. I'm the map chair.
This means I take the architect's rendering of the show layout and convert it into a readable map graphic, take the Excel file with booth assignments, correct the misspellings, swap the first and last names into proper order, alphabetize the whole shebang and set type and leading. I solicit the demonstration schedule and titles from demo chair, write incidental articles, organize and layout the sponsors page. And ultimately produce a paste-up file of an 11x17" map to print and hand out to customers at the door.
Today was the print deadline. Theoretically, I should have had sponsorship and final booth layout and lists a week ago. In fact, they finally arrived last Thursday morning. Which means I spent much of last week checking my email, sending emails, moving articles around in big blank layouts, and stressing.
I finally decided I was wasting time I could have been using, so I gave up on the map and went out in the studio. I didn't have the focus to really do heavy production, so I made fiddly, time consuming things. Small covered crocks. Pitchers, creamers, gravy boats. Teapots.
I was finally able to put all the pieces of the map together Friday, proofed it during the slower parts of Saturday Market, and uploaded it to the printer this morning. Now my brain wants to take a vacation, but I still have teapots to put together.
