Happy New Year!
Apr. 4th, 2015 04:18 pmMarket New Year, like Easter and the Lunar New Year, is a moveable feast. It can happen as early as April 1st, engendering much hilarity in the celebration, or as late as the 7th, when you can tell who's run through their Holiday Market savings by their white knuckles and fixed smiles.

For years, we'd set up our booth at Oh-god-early o'clock, because I'd then hare off to do my radio show. Last year my show moved to afternoon, but old habits die hard, and we're still out there at 7:30 am. Our current excuse is that the information booth has moved to across the street, and we want to have our van in, unloaded, and gone again before the vendors on the lottery list begin to line up.
This is the first Market--and first Saturday--since I left radio entirely, and a few listeners stop by to congratulate/commiserate. I'm surprised how relaxed I am. It's easy to miss just how much work and stress come from planning a show, and then sitting in a studio for two hours pushing buttons, cueing music, talking on air and answering phones. Being in the booth, even with Denise away helping a Braille student, is just restful by comparison.
Weather holds dry all day, even sunny and warm in spots, and sales are good. It seems to be a day for tall mugs and painted mugs. Between a special order I deliver before opening and purchases at the booth, I think I sell eleven. And one bunnies small baker, because it's Easter.
