Show and tell
Mar. 14th, 2015 02:12 pmThis is traditionally what I call the "Season of Disappointment." Every January and February, I do my homework and apply to art shows for the spring and summer months. (Fall is solidly booked with Clay Fest, Clayfolk, and Holiday Market.) I need four or five out-of-town fairs to fill out the income I make from sales in Eugene. Much as I love this town, there just aren't enough customers here to support us in the (frugal) lifestyle to which we are accustomed.
So I apply to a bunch of shows. There's always a handful of smaller shows where I have a history, an established client base, and a fair certainty of getting in: Roseburg, Silverton, Coupeville or Fremont Fair. I also apply to some top-end shows, hoping to snag one or two, or at least get on the waiting list.
Mid-March is when the rejection letters start coming in. "Season of Disappointment," right?
Only, not. So far, I've gotten four acceptances, no rejections. I'm in Roseburg, no surprise there, but I'm also in Edmonds again, after about an eight year hiatus. And I just got an acceptance letter from the Salem Art Fair & Festival. This has never happened before, in all my 22 years of applying. I also got accepted into Fremont Fair, which is problematic, as it's the same weekend as Edmonds, and I applied to both with the assumption that I'd only get into one. Currently waiting to hear back from the promoters that they've refunded my booth fee...
