Opening Day

Opening a kiln is a little like Christmas, with the proviso that you could find a lot of socks and underwear: over-fired pots, under-fired pots, oxidation spots, uneven temperature. Today's firing was just about perfect: cones the same top and bottom, a bare minimum of oxidation in the troublesome lower left door corner. One city of Eugene mug I'll have to redo because the cobalt lettering was applied too thick and burned out in spots to black oxide.
Every now and then someone asks how many pots fit into a 50 cubic-foot kiln. My best answer is many. I'm not sure I want to know more accurately than that. In any event, I'll have plenty of new pots to take to my fair in Silverton, and a bunch of orders to deliver next week. And then start again.
