So when I was fiddling with the battery on the van, I noticed a lot of fluid seeping out of the top of the power steering box, so took it into the shop Tuesday. Got a call from Ron the mechanic today, saying they'd fixed it, aligned the steering, and also had I noticed my shocks were failing? Not wanting to cheap on shocks on a vehicle full of fragile pottery, I authorized the fix. Ron also asked, Do you have any mugs with dolphins on them? My wife loves your mugs.

Inventory says yes, I do. It's in the van right now.

How wonderful that your work affects people so. And it just occurred to me that when, as is likely one day, it is broken, why, it simply returns to being clay. Or that just could be wishful thinking from me, whose work turns to shit or garbage in a day.

Actually, it turns to gravel. Firing is a metamorphic process that converts the clay to glass/stone. It would take geologic time to break it back down to clay. (If that would even work. Clay weathers from feldspar, which is a less complex mineral than glazed stoneware.)

Though I'm reminded of a traditional thing they used to do in India, selling tea to train riders in unfired cups. After you finish, you just toss your cup out on the track, where it breaks down into clay again. Of course, if you linger over your tea, your cup starts to dissolve...
