Comics Curmudgeon readers! Do you love this blog and yearn for a novel written by its creator? Well, good news: Josh Fruhlinger's The Enthusiast is that novel! It's even about newspaper comic strips, partly. Check it out!

Shoe, 1/11/26

Did, uh, did you know that “naked running” means running without music? I myself did not, and I can’t find much evidence that this is a phrase particularly widely known by others; it’s the name of a company that makes belts for running, and sometimes it’s used more broadly to mean running without any kind of gadgets. But a little poking around to research this turned up this post in a UK running group on Facebook, and, uh, do you think the syndicated newspaper comic strip Shoe stole a joke from a UK running group on Facebook? Who’s to say. We should mostly focus our energy on praying that the brain trust over there never gets wind of “rawdogging.”

Mary Worth, 1/11/26

God damn it, Sunny! Ian was so close to the sweet relief of death! So close! You’ve thwarted him once again!

Pluggers, 1/11/26

Look, man, people often yell at me for being a coastal elitist because I make fun of the pluggers in Pluggers, but today’s strip is about how pluggers would rather eat fast food than exercise and they won’t even get out of their car to do it, and I didn’t write this joke. A faithful reader of the strip did, and he sent it into the syndicate, and then they drew it and put it in the newspaper! I’m not the mean one here!

Mother Goose and Grimm, 1/11/26

Good lord, they murdered that turkey. He was so happy to survive the carnage but then they murdered him and ate him! With big stupid grins on their faces!

The U.S. attack on Venezuela has shifted the ground for the various guerrilla groups operating across the borderlands with Colombia, raising fears of possible betrayal by Venezuelan regime officials, while opening the door to a wider conflict should U.S. boots ever hit the ground, local security experts say.

The best thing about a photo I found tonight of John Vickery in 1981 is not that it headcanoned itself instantly as an image of the younger Neroon, it's that I had just been watching him in an American Theatre Wing seminar from that same year and been struck by how little of his older self in or out of character was immediately traceable in his thin collegiate face and especially his light Californian voice and so when looking out of mildly feverish curiosity for his notices that summer as Prince Hal I was really not expecting to find through nothing but chiaroscuro and expression his future Minbari bones.

Offstage, he had reminded me more of Kyle MacLachlan and barely looked old enough to have the bachelor's in mathematics which was part of his origin story. He tells it again in another seminar in 1998 and still has a nervous gesture of touching one of his eyes as if tired or distracted slightly; he's a great fidgeter in front of an off-the-cuff audience. I had gone looking originally for his voice, which turns out not even to be that mid-Atlantic when he's using it for himself. Three decades plus I had to notice this actor with my brain on perpetual standby for B5 and now it has an opinion.

To keep on the theme of theater, I had no idea until her obituary that Tina Packer started her career in the three-quarters burninated 1966 BBC David Copperfield with Ian McKellen and then the much more successfully recovered 1968 Doctor Who: The Web of Fear before she discovered she cared much less for acting than directing or producing, whence Shakespeare & Company. The last time I saw Hugh Whitemore's Breaking the Code was in 2011 at Central Square Theater and they are reviving it this spring with the actor I last saw as Gaveston in the ASP's Edward II in 2017, whom I expect to be a superb Turing and me to leave the theater muttering about Joan Clarke as usual. In lieu of a teleporter, I have to hope for a transfer of this High Noon.

When I wrote one of my age of sail novels, I wrote 100 drabbles to fit a prompt square, all interlinked, instead of a plot plan, and then expanded them into the larger story, and that worked really well. So instead of doing an individual short story for each of these, I think I'll do the same for the cozy fantasy I'm writing now, and use them as prompts for the chapters I have left.

Speaking of original fiction, I thought I would start a community in which original fic writers could discuss fic writing, get support and advice from each other etc. So if that would be a thing you are interested in, you can find it here https://original-fic.dreamwidth.org/

Comment with Just One Thing you've accomplished in the last 24 hours or so. It doesn't have to be a hard thing, or even a thing that you think is particularly awesome. Just a thing that you did.

Feel free to share more than one thing if you're feeling particularly accomplished!

Extra credit: find someone in the comments and give them props for what they achieved!

Nothing is too big, too small, too strange or too cryptic. And in case you'd rather do this in private, anonymous comments are screened. I will only unscreen if you ask me to.

It's Sunday morning at 7 am, and that means it's time to get my journalling on. /random Bake on reference.

After game on Friday, the cough and more problematic hoarse voice came roaring back. I finally had to cancel both games because I had no voice, and I just felt kind of shitty. I felt horribly bad about it, but I just couldn't. Jess convinced me to take the first blast of a steroid dose pack, so I started on that. I was resisting because it makes me moody and bitchy normally. Though as Jess pointed out, I've not taken them with the Astartys or Vyvanse, so the "you must chill" job that it does might blunt some of the side effects. We shall see. I just took my second dose, and my god those things are vile. They have no coating, so they start melting the moment you put them in your mouth, and they are nasty tasting.

Yesterday, I did put on clothes long enough to take my sister to the garage to have her car done. She'll go today to pick it up. She says she'll have BIL take her, but we'll see. I suspect I'll be taking her after game, but we'll see.

I have a game this morning that I'm not dming for, so hopefully that one won't be a problem. I'll just mute until I have to speak, and that'll be fine. This afternoon, I plan to do nothing, except maybe get our Bake Off on. The season's been done for nearly 4 months, I know who wins, but I still want to watch it.

We have another contender in the dress bonanza. I like this one too, but I'm still deciding. Neither of the top contenders have pockets, which is annoying, but I got a little black cross body bag that'll cover me for the basics.

I know it's hard to tell, because literally all I did was throw on a bra and the dress. Just imagine it with my hair looking like it's been brushed and with black flats and a pair of nice tights on. (also, tights, nude or sheer black? I can't decide.)

I would also like to do some work on the cruise, so that I can get everyone checked in. I do need to get travel insurance, just in case we get sick in Vancouver, or on the cruise as well. I'm going to compare some plans, and go from there. We're all basically healthy, so it shouldn't be terrible.

For dinner, I actually need to cook. Pork chops with garlic pirogies and sour cream and sauerkraut (if desired). I think it'll be delicious.

Tomorrow shall be work. I'm sure my counterpart will be back, so I'll be doing a little more phones, little less wheeling and dealing, though we'll see. I know I have a few people to call back about their appts to move them to a different location. Certain insurances don't want to allow patients to schedule at hospital connected radiology centers, because there's a facility fee, and they don't want to pay that. But our system is not sophisticated enough to block it, so people book and then I call them and move them. It's a pain in my ass, and the least favorite part of my job. Fortunately, I can also send them messages through the portal, so sometimes I do that as well.

We've got like five patients this week and I've gotten through to one. Which I 100% understand. I don't answer my phone either. Though on most phones, we come up as Johns Hopkins or at least "Medical." So I'd probably answer.

Time to go forth and prepare for this game. Hopefuly, I can make myself heard with my still-hoarse voice. Everyone have a stupendous Saturday!

The Day After My Birthday!

10:36pm: Still kind of felt like my birthday because after archery this morning I went over to my parents place for our weekly lunch and my little bro was there too! I also purchased one of the Coles small mudcakes which proved to be very yummy indeed! Especially with the ice cream and strawberries Mum provided.

It was good to see the little bro, even though he is having trouble at his new place of employment, it's a small business and it seems he has two bosses so to speak, which makes it rather difficult if they give different instructions. Hopefully, it'll work out for him.

In other news, today's weather was pretty much a 180 from yesterday - cloudy, rainy and rather cool, although not that cool, I almost wore a long sleeve shirt, but at the last moment decided to put on a regular t-shirt, which proved to be a good idea since it was still like 24 degrees.

Today was another urban field shot, which is where the targets are set up in such a way that you have to shoot in very odd places, like in a bush, or up a step ladder or with one foot up on target that's lying down. It's rather fun, although I was doing the "easiest" peg - yellow and apparently because of my age I really should be doing blue or even red. However, I'm nowhere near as good as people in my age group typically are, I have shot the yellow peg before - but alas I could not beat my PB. I was also in a group with young kids and one of them beat me LOL. I did though get a very impressive 6 (the field archery equivalent of a 10) shooting in the bushes with tree branches blocking my sight. I took a photo, I should post that, although of course it was more a fluke then good aim.

After the field shoot, there was a Working Bee, which I did try to participate in, but since I was having lunch with the parentals I had to leave before the work really started going. Which I felt a bit bad about, so after the lunch with like two-thirds of the cake I headed back. They must have worked fast though because when I got there almost everyone had left! But the remaining people were happy to have some cake, because who wouldn't be :OP Also by this point the predicted showers were heading in so I headed off home to watch Dr Gluon on YouTube.

I figured I was done for the day, but an hour or so later Mum rang and asked me to take my long phone charger cable to Grandpa in the hospital. I had given Mum the phone cable yesterday to take to Grandpa, but he didn't think he needed it, but alas he did. So I headed out in my car and fortunately got a parking space in the side street near the hospital (because as I've mentioned they charge through the nose!), although by this point it was raining. I managed not to get wet and delivered the cable to Grandpa in good time. He's currently recovering in a shared room, but he was in good spirits. There was a lady in another room who Grandpa's pretty sure has dementia because she was yelling for the nurses to come, but then seemed to tell them off when they arrived. Poor lady.

Finally, in laptop related news, everything is running so much better now, including The Sims 4 and I'm now officially onto the Carrot Gen in the Very Veggie Legacy Challenge. Julien has moved to Chestnut Ridge (I finally remembered it's name!) and has his first horse, a little colt called Mayo Neighs (Dr Gluon had a horse with the same name and I couldn't resist). Him being a colt does mean Julien can't ride him yet, but hey I can work on it's temperament. Julien does need to earn money though - he did have some, but I had to get him a shower and the lot did already have some horse stuff on it. However, he's roughing it at the moment with just a sleeping bag and campfire.

Right, it's after 11 now, so I better go, I didn't get enough sleep last night, and I want to make sure I get the proper amount of zzzs.

What with the snow and then Storm Goretti we hadn't been for a walk together all week. But yesterday we did one of our favourite forest walks in the Coed y Brenin, the one that starts in the village car park. The weather was cold, but otherwise good for walking. There were clumps of snow beside some of the tracks where the sun hadn't been able to reach to melt it, but the tracks themselves were free of ice.

The only photos of G I can ever take are a back view in the middle distance.

Forest track

Sometimes the sun even came out! The forest was surprisingly busy considering the time of year. Perhaps people had had the same idea as us, namely to grab the chance before the next batch of bad weather rolled in? There are a couple of cyclists and a walker or two in the distance.

There was some sunshine

More here... )

It was a good walk and I needed the exercise after being pretty sedentary over the Christmas period. I don't know when we'll get out again. Today is drier than forecast, but very windy. I don't like going out in high winds. There's too much danger from flying chunks of tree, falling branches and slates blown off roofs if I'm walking in town. I will have to venture out at some point because I need to post our daughter's birthday card. She's currently in Tenerife celebrating her birthday a little early. It's a special one this year as she's 50. How on earth can I be old enough to have a 50-year-old daughter?!

Husband is currently putting the very final touches on the plastering in my room. I get to do the cleanup on wednesday and thursday. It works out pretty well actually, because I worked yesterday so I get thursday off instead, and I can just get it over with. He already hovered up most of the dust, so I'm already well helped there. Once that's done, he can paint it (still haven't fully settled on a colour), and then it's getting the new furniture, getting that installed and moving back in. Still haven't managed to have a go at those curtains, though.

It's not going to be today, because there's opera this afternoon. Andrea Chenier, which I had never heard of before, by Giordano, who I had also never heard about before. It was a bit uncertain whether or not we would go what with me having a one day weekend and all, but I was listening to it while at work yesterday and I thought it seemed pretty good. Plus, it's opera in the cinema, so it's a Met production and those are always pretty lavish and worth seeing.
