Day two, part two…

Came back to the sculpture after lunch, and started on the head. It's the trickiest part of the beast, particularly because none of my reference photos agree: different animals, different angles, different ages. It's a tough puzzle to assemble. Then add the fact that Marjories original photo is a copy of a copy. It's not an easy bit to construct.

And I have to construct it in stages. The head is too big and slabs to fragile to build separately and attach, as I did the legs. So I add the forehead first, then the bridge of the nose, work some slabs underneath to form jaws and chin. The rest of the trunk I build in one piece, and attach. Add a little clay around the eyes, model them. Do a little detailing around the trunk, add a lower lip. End with ears, folded and wrinkled.

It's been a busy day.
