You can tell it's fall

Not only by my frozen toesies, but by the fact that I'm preparing for Inktober! This will be the sixth year that I've challenged myself to do a drawing a day for the entire month, with bonus drawings until the sketchbook runs out. I've bound my new sketchbook for the year, using paper projects from previous Emerald Book and Paper Arts workshops.

Note the clever little "6" in "Octob6r."

Are those ginkgo leaves? Very pretty! :)

They are! It's a process the workshop leader called "paper batik." Started by making a stamp from craft foam--the leaves--and doing an overall pattern on brown kraft paper (in this case, repurposed grocery bags), then color over with crayons, add a thinned tempera paint wash, and finish with beeswax. The spine is from another project, making faux leather by crumpling kraft, adding a thin black wash to the back side to bleed through the creases, then successive washes of acrylic to the front to layer on color. (In this case, including a copper metallic.)
