The challenge was: Post a list of five famous people you've been within a few feet of, and one you haven't. The challenge is for everyone else to guess the ringer.

So Fred Pohl was GOH at the very first CouleeCon, a very tiny SF convention in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. He'd just won a Hugo for Gateway; I think I still have an autographed copy somewhere on my shelves. The con also had an unexpected drop-in guest, a young writer who'd just won his first Hugo for a short story, Sandkings: George R. R. Martin.
I shared a glass elevator with Pete Seeger at the International Folk Alliance Conference in Portland, Oregon. Was way to shy to say anything. Later in the weekend, famed Irish fiddler Kevin Burke was in the same elevator, just riding up and down providing live elevator music.
Casey Affleck actually paid me money. He bought his son a piggy bank at my booth at the Eugene Saturday Market. Didn't recognize the face--I'm not all that movie savvy--but stammered a little when I saw the name on his VISA. Asked for ID, and sure enough, there he was on a California driver's license. I'm two degrees of separation away from Batman.
I actually interviewed Brandi Carlile on my radio show, The Saturday Cafe, back before she was famous. She and the Hanseroth twins were touring behind an EP that would become the core of her first self-titled album, and stopped at KLCC to promote a show that evening. Lovely folks all.
I got to see Jimmy Carter, live, at the National FFA (Future Farmers of America) Convention in Kansas City when I was a sophomore in high school and he was still Governor of Georgia (and peanut farmer). But as it was in an enormous arena, I never got within a hundred feet of him.
