Denise hates to see things go to waste. It's all part and parcel of our children-of-Depression-Era-parents-incipient-hoarder personalities. So last November, when she saw an ear of corn in the wastebasket at church, she had to rescue it.

In her defense, it was a pretty gorgeous ear of corn--look up glass gem corn, and you'll see what I mean. It'd been part of a Thanksgiving display, dismantled for Advent, and she decided to plant the kernels in spring and see what came up.

She got a nice row of plants along the back fence, all but two of which stayed upright, and most of which provided one or two little ears of corn, bit over a dozen in total. Not nearly as varied and translucent as the original, but still quite lovely.

And then there's this ear.

We decided to hang them up in the spare bathroom to dry. In retrospect, this may have been a mistake.

Right now she's out back, cutting up leaves and husks to soak down and make paper pulp. The purple-black husks from the "Oooh!" ear will be kept separate, soaked and pounded into paper, and the reddish black tassels saved as well.

agaçant, ça
