Surprise!

I thought I was doing pretty well. Had pretty much everything made that I needed for my next glaze firing. One bisque finished, another half-full, waiting for enough work to dry so I could top it off. The last pots were trimmed and handled Friday morning, and Denise was going to drop me and the boxes of bisque off at the studio on her way to a paper making workshop at LCC Saturday morning. It looked like I'd even get an afternoon off.

Friday night I got an email from a wholesale customer, wanting $750 worth of pots for the Christmas sales season (that's $1500 retail). My next glaze firing isn't until early December. And I didn't have nearly enough bisque prepared in the items they wanted.

I can't blow them off; this is the only non-consignment wholesale account I have. They actually pay me when they get the pottery (well, within 30 days) rather than waiting until they sell it.

So every day since last Friday, I've been setting the alarm for 5:45 am so I can spend a couple of hours in the studio before breakfast. Saturday, I threw a hundred pounds of pasta and serving bowls. Sunday it was twenty tall mugs. This morning it was trimming the bowls, smoothing and stamping and flipping the mugs. I also finished loading a bisque and set it to firing. Tonight I got handles on the mugs. (This is in addition to glazing pots for eight hours Saturday and Monday, and driving down to southern Oregon for a pair of Clayfolk meetings Sunday. And choir practice and a grocery run tonight.)

Not so much burning the candle at both ends as vaporizing it.

But I'm caught up, at last. Tomorrow I can sleep a little later, though I do have to start the kiln cooling so I can unload and reload it tomorrow night. but it explains why I haven't scanned in the next batch of Inktober pictures, though I have been doing them.

Meantime, to tide you over, here's three dessert plates from Saturday's glazing. More tomorrow.
