Fish story

I often get follow-up emails after an out-of-town show. Usually, it's someone I talked to about a special order, or who had second thoughts about passing up on a particular piece. Non-Buyer's remorse, Denise and I call it.

This one was a little different. She'd approached another potter, Nina Fernstöm-Duong of Raku Fish at Ceramic Showcase, asking about doing a fish bank for her nephew. Nina didn't think raku was a strong enough material for a five-year-old's bank, so referred her to me.

So she checked out my website and emailed me. Said she wished she'd found me at Showcase, let slip that she'd bought a dinosaur bank for her other nephew (not one of mine, sadly, it was by Dulcie Lindsoe-Johansen), and asked if I could make her a fish.

Well, I couldn't hold her poor taste in dinosaur banks against her (I jokes, Dulcie. It's a very nice dinosaur.), so I said "Sure." The boy isn't old enough to differentiate between types of fish--if it flops on a hook, he's happy--so I settled on something from the trout/salmon family. Steel head, maybe, we'll see how the glaze turns out. Here's the idea as it spawned.

Decided to try something a little different. Rather than putting a coin slot down the top of the head, I opened up the mouth a little, so fisher-boy can feed his fishy a little bait.
