The clay is here! The clay is here! I was down to 12 lbs.; now I have more.

I order it by the ton because there's a price break. I could probably save a little more on shipping if I filled up the pallet--they're rated for 2800 lbs.--but a ton is about as much as I can store at a time. The freight haulers are insanely brave--they pull into the middle of River Road (four lanes plus middle turn lane, 45 mph speed limit), then back across two lanes of traffic and up my driveway. (We tried dropping the pallet in the street and rolling up the driveway, once. The driveway doesn't look steep, but that tiny little incline just about killed us.)

Once he's parked, the driver uses a pallet jack and lift gate to deposit the clay on the driveway, then rolls it into the cover of the carport. After he leaves, I break down the clay into manageable loads, five boxes (250 lbs.) per hand truck trip up the ramp into my studio.

I do this five or six times a year. So this is what the next two months' work looks like.
