Had to play musical shelves in the studio today, moving things around so I could clear off the top of the kiln and load it. In dampest midwinter, when it takes forever for things to dry, I stack up ware boards on the kiln, the slab roller, the workbench above the pugmill. Every flat surface in the studio, in other words, except for the wedging table and the wheel, which I need to keep clear so I can make more pots. Then I have to re-arrange everything when I finally have enough dry pots to load the bisque.

First to dry this time were all the yarn bowls. I'm having serious second thoughts about this project: they take up a huge amount of space in the kiln. They don't stack inside each other, like bowls or plates, they're so fragile with the slotted rim that I don't feel safe stacking them more than two deep, unlike, say, mugs, which I could theoretically fill an entire kiln with, using no shelves at all. I did manage a little space economy: I loaded a tumbler (basically a tall mug without handle) inside each pair of bowls. But I still only managed to fit fifty yarn bowls in the kiln, with room left for some tiles and a couple of platters.

I noticed something fun, though. When stacked just right, the bowls showed a violin f-hole, sort of like in the famous Man Ray photograph, Le Violon d'Ingres.
